The weather in Great Britain
In Britain the weather is very changeable. It rains a lot, but the sun often shines too. Winters can be fairly cold, with an average temperature of 5° C in the south, it rarely snows there. Summers can be cool or warm, but the temperature does not usually go above 30°C. It is often cloudy and there are sometimes grey skies for days or weeks at times. Days are long in summer and short in winter. British people never know what´s the weater will be like.
The climate in England is milder than in other European countries and it is often the subject of conversation. Foreigners who come to England especially in summer often say that the English summer consists of three fine days and a thunderstorm. The climate is influenced by the Gulf Stream,, which makes it mild and damp at the same time. That is why the pastures and meadows are green and fresh all the year round. The south of England is especially lovely. Cattle and sheep graze in the meadows and they usually stay out even in winter. Winters are short and damp in Great Britain, but they aren´t very cold, Children like winters very much because snow is a great fun for them. Winters mean a bit of white settling on garden and occasionally having to drive carefully on icy roads early in the morning. The British Isles as a whole has an annual rainfall of over one meter.

Spring starts on March 21st accoring to the calendar. The actual situation, however, is often somewhat different. In the spring flowers start growing and the grass starts turning green, nature returns to life, vegetation grows rapidly because there is lot of sunshine and rain. One moment the sun is shining and it feels warm, but suddenly the sky becomes overcast, it starts to drizzle and rain, hailstone may fall and often it even snows. Spring is time for planting most types of vegetables and fruit trees. Fashion- In the spring it always pays to carry an umbrella or at least have raincoat. It is dificult to say what we should put on in this season. We should realize that on moment the sun is shining and sudenlly it´s rainy. We should keep in mind the practical aspects and have at hands something little warmer for exapmle: small cardigan.
Summer begins on June 21st . In the summer the sun´s rays become more intense. The thermometer climbs up to many degrees above zero..It very romantic when the sun pours into the room and wake us up. In the summer some storms may break out. The sky turns overcast with dark clouds that hide the sun. And next is absolutely downpour. Hail often falls as well, which can cause extensive damage. This season is usually very hot in our country and it is the best season for studens because they have two months holidays. Children look forward to relaxing and not having to write homework. In the summer people go swimming, some in a swimming pool or some travel to foreign countries. The summer is ideal time for sports. We can play voleyball or beachvoleyball and favourite activities are bicycle riding, hiking, etc. Fashion- Besides light and short clothing for example:dress- can be wide, tight with short or long sleeves, with slits, with flowers, stripes. We can wear a hat along with the dress or carry a parasol, skirt- along with the skirt we usually wear T-shirt, a blouse, a shirt, or shirt with a vest we should get a pair of sunglasses and good sun-lotion.
The real summer time ends for everyone as soon as the school year starts. Autumn begins on September 23rd. In autumn leaves turn yellow and reddish and fall to the ground. Most birds migrate to warmer contries. In the morning there isn´t only dew but also thick white fog . It´s very dangerous for drivers. In this season it often rains and drizzles. The days become shorter and the nights longer. The sun goes down early and comes up late.
Winters begin on December 21st. In the winter are cold days and even colder nights. Days of autumn change to the cold days of winter. The first frosts arrive and roads become icy. Rain becomes sleet and then snow, at first turning to slush in the streets. Puddles are frozen over and there is a lot of snow everywhere. Fashion-In the winter light clothing are exchanged for something a warmer. Our clothes include a muffler, cap, headband and gloves, mittens, warm jacket or coats.
For the theatre performance– We can wear evening dresses. If we don´t feel like wearing a dress, we can put on a jacket with matching trousers.
For an informal party- When we go out to school or go to some birthday informal party skirt and T-shirt or dress is appropriate. We want to feel good, we can wear some baggy clothes.
