New York and other american cities
The city of New York (also known as The Big Apple) is the largest city in the United States.
New York is an important industrial port. The city has a population of about 8 million within an area
of 830 square kilometers. New york lies on the east cost of the Hudson and East Rivers.
It is one of the world's leading commercial,financial and cultural centers. There are 4 airports: J.F.Kennedy, Newark, La Guardia and Teterboro. There are famous yellow cabs. New york has the largest subway system in the world. There are 15 TV stations, 39 radio stations, over 100 hospitals, 29 universities: two of the most famous are Columbia University – the oldestand largest of all universities in New York and New York university – the largest private university in USA, main building is in Washington Square. There are many cultural institutions and galleries.
The city is also home to many of the world's most famous skyscrapers that dominate skyline: the Chrysler building, the Empire State Building, the group of buildings that make up the Rockefeller Center, which collapsed after terrorist attacks in September 2001. New York also has many bridges,such as the Brooklyn Bridge, the George Washington bridge and the Verrazano Narrows Bridge.
Places of general interest:
There are many interesting places to visit in New York. The most famous site in the city is the Statue of Liberty – it is the first sight to attract the visitors eyes when going to New York from the US itself. Visitors to New York usually want to see Wall street – center of financial world and the second highest in the world after the Sears Tower in Chicago, St Paul's chapel – the oldest church in New York built in 1766, Madison square – was named in memory of James Madison, the president established it as a park in 1811, Manhatten and Ellis Island.
New York is subdivided into 5 boroughs: Manhatten, The Bronx Brooklyn, Queens and Staten Island (also known as Richmond)
Shopping:
The busiest shopping streets are 5th Avenue is the place where the largest department stores or fashion stores are situated.
Central Park, the largest of all New York's park. The Bronx has 2: the New York Botanical Garden and the Bronx Zoo.
History:
The original inhabitants were Indians. The oldest part – Manhatten Island – was bought from the Indians by the Dutch in 1625 for the bargain price 25 american dollars. The original names was New Amsterdam but in 1644 the British settlers renamed it to New York. The name is from the brother of the English King Puke of York
Culture:New York has world famous theatres which are particularly center around Times square. Also Brodway is the centre of cultural life. There are cinemas, theatres and music clubs. Some of the most well known theatres are Carnegie Hall, Radio city Music Hall and the Metropolitan Opera House.
New York is also home to several professional sport teams, including the Mets (baseball), Rangers (ice hockey) and the Knicks (basketball). Two famous stadiums are Yankee and Skea.
Finally, in New York, there are many important Newspapers and magazines. For example The New York times, The Washington Post, The New Yorker, Vogue and Time.
Other Americian cities
On Western coast the well – known cities are Los Angeles and San Francisco.
Los Angeles is the second largest city in the USA. Here we can find the famous film centre Hollywood. And luxurious quarters such as Beverly Hills. Every year in April the American film Academy awards Oscars for the best film of the year. Los Angeles is also the center of crime. There is also the biggest ZOO in the world.
San Francisco is one of the cleanest cities in the USA. There are an earthquakes often. We can find Berkeley University there.
In the South there we can find folowing cities: New orleans, the city where jazz was born and where
Mississippi flows into the Gulf of Mexico.
Houston with the NASA centre and Johnson Space Centre.
The biggest cities in the East are Philadelphia, which is one of the oldest cities and which used to be the first US capital. Chicago wherefirst skyscraper was built (Montank Block). In 1971 the highest Skyscraper in the USA was built there (Sears Tower, 438 m high). And Detroit it is the center of US
car industry (Pontiac, Chevrolet, Ford, Chrysler and Cadillac).
